Roberto Crippa was born in Monza in 1921 During his studies at the Brera Academy in Milan he had Aldo Carpi, Achille Funi and Carlo Carrà as teachers
In 1948 he participated in the Milan Triennale and the Venice Biennale, where he was again present in 1950
Between 1948 and 1952 his works were characterised by spirals and ellipses, which was followed by the period he defined as Collages and that, in his later years, defined as The Metaphysics of Matters
In the 1950s Crippa frequented Lucio Fontana, signed the third of the Spatialism manifestos, and visited New York where he met the art dealer Alexander Jolas, who organised solo exhibitions for him on an annual basis In the same years Crippa took part in solo and group exhibitions in New York, at the Naviglio in Milan, in Florence, in Venice, Zurich and Stockholm
He was very active in the international artistic climate and also met Brauer, Ernst, Lam and Matta with whom he exchanged experiences, thanks to which he arrived at the maturation of his Totem works…
