Biography

Sandro Chia, born in Florence in 1946 under the name Alessandro Coticchia, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence He moved to Rome in 1970, exhibiting his first solo show in 1971 at the La Salita gallery Initially devoted to conceptual art after moving to Rome, the artist later embraced figurative art, becoming an exponent of the Transavantgarde movement Chia has devoted himself to both painting and sculpture, turning to the latter in 1982 He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1980, 1984, and 1989 His works are present in important Italian and international museums such as the Castello di Rivoli, the Guggenheim, and the Met in New York
