Biography

Gianni Colombo was born in Milan in 1937 and studied at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, experimenting with different materials and languages
Under the influence of Lucio Fontana’s lesson, he produced polymateric works and monochrome wadding reliefs that, in 1959, he exhibited at the Azimut Gallery in Milan, an exhibition space in whose creation he collaborated with Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, Giovanni Anceschi, Davide Boriani and Gabriele De Vecchi
The artist, a key figure in the rise of kinetic art in the 1950s and 1960s, works with various media including painting, sculpture, furniture design and light installations He founded the art movement Gruppo T, with Anceschi, Boriani and De Vecchi with whom he shared the idea that art should be kinetic and participatory Colombo’s aim was in fact to create interactive spaces that abolished the static boundaries that divided painting, sculpture and architecture
In 1960, with Miriorama 4, Gianni Colombo’s first solo exhibition was held at the Galleria Pater in Milan, where he exhibited his first kinetic works: the Superfici in variazione and the Rilievi intermutabili
