I show you the works of two artists, Turi Simeti and Agostino Bonalumi. Almost the same age, Simeti and Bonalumi met in the bustling Milan of the 1960s, where the master of all young avant-garde artists, Lucio Fontana, cut the canvas to reveal what lay beyond, the space beyond the surface.
Simeti and Bonalumi’s works are monochrome in order to eliminate any reference to recognizable forms. They are three-dimensional, with extroflections and introflections created by elements placed behind the canvas. The canvas is thus transformed into an object, a sculpture, where light and shadow change the perception of the surface. The artist’s ego is completely erased, the works are made of variable modules, and the monochrome is an invitation to reflection and meditation.
